Blood donations save lives! Meet some of our Wall of Heroes members and read about how these heroes help us save critically ill patients. You can also find out if your dog or cat is eligible to become a blood donor.
Ollie is a gorgeous golden retriever who is fully vaccinated and up to date on his flea, tick, and worm prevention. He came in with his owner Mike to donate blood in June 2023. Once her blood tests confirmed she was in good health, she donated 400mLs of whole blood. Her donation was received by a 9-week-old puppy who was critically ill with a hookworm infestation. Well done, Ollie, you saved a life, and you’re a hero
This is beautiful Nash, who belongs to our Nurse Manager. He is a regular blood donor and so far, he has saved a young Fox Terrier who ate rat bait and needed a blood transfusion. Nash, you’re a hero and so is Nat.
Delightful Pepsi recently joined our Wall of Heroes. First, we ran tests to make sure she was free from heartworm and that her haematology and biochemistry were normal. Then she had a mild sedative and blood was collected into a sterile bag while she enjoyed some attention from our nursing team. Then she enjoyed some high-protein snacks and went home for some couch time. We are very proud of you, Pepsi, because your donation saved a spaniel with a life-threatening immune condition. Welcome to our Wall of Heroes
Blood donation is a life saving process. If your dog qualifies to give blood we will add you to our list of donor dogs. We rotate donors so no donor gives blood more often than every 3 months, but ideally only once a year. We will call you when we need blood donations as we do not store large volumes of blood.
We really appreciate you giving your time and offering your pets support. We are sorry if any of the questions mean that your dog is not suitable to be a donor. This is to protect the recipients from any harm due to a transfusion as well as limit any risk to your own pet that may come from taking blood.
If you have a healthy, vaccinated dog or cat who is up to date on their flea, tick and worm prevention, they could be eligible to donate blood and save other pets in need. This is a vital service that we provide, and we can’t do it without the you, our Cairns community. Complete this form if you’re interested, and we’ll contact you.
